HISTORY |

It all starts back in the late seventies when Rolando & Jose discover the Latin scene in London!
After a while, the brother's meet and became friends with the man who probably started the hot Latin nights in London.
At the well known Kensington pub in Holland Park, London UK, Of course, we are talking about no other than, Jorge Spiteri, the SPITERI Brothers, Jorge & Charlie.
The band called Ananta later on called Mañana.
Bolivar UK was founded in February 1984, by; Jose Ibata, with the help of Andy Riva [Trumpet Backing vocals Percussion]Later on Taking Over, "The Management" of BOLIVAR U.K. But still playing with the Band. Also Vincent Scanlan, Rolando Ibata & Bill Bland playing very important key roles in the Harmony and rhythm areas of the Band.
The Band has ten full - time members, based in London, the name of the Band comes from Don Simon Bolivar after whom was called Bolivia. The country of Brothers Jose and Rolando Ibata.
All the Songs of Bolivar UK are originals written by Jose and Rolando Ibata.

The emergence up and down the country of a number of popular and
busy bands playing Latin music has been one of the features of the
UK's live Scene in the last ten years. Brothers Jose and Rolando Ibata have one of the most exiting of
these groups, Bolivar UK.
Since 1984 Bolivar UK have received extraordinarily Good Reviews
from all over the country.
Their sound is a mixture of bepop and Jazz, recalling the age of the
Mambo and brilliant performers in New York like Tito Puente and
Ruben Blades.
At the heart of Bolivar UK is the wicked percussion, the pulse
of Afro-Latin music, woven brilliantly with Jose Ibata's rhythmic
bass and Christian Vaughan'n authentic Latino piano style.
A ten piece of supreme danceability and Class.

"THE HOT STUFF OF DEEP AFRICANA INFLUENCES, HEAVY PULSATING BEATS, STEAMS THROUGH, THEIR TRADITIONAL LATIN RHYTHM WILE BRITISH JAZZ.-. ADDS ANOTHER EUPHORIC ACCENT TO THE SWIRL."
["THE GUARDIAN", 30/8/89]
PLAYHOUSE THEATER EDINBURGH
Bolivar band at the opposite end of the musical spectrum, aim their comparatively ultramodern salsa sound at the hips and also Hit home.
Describing their sound as originating from Venezuela, Colombia and the Latin triangles, (i.e. NEW YORK MIAMI and the HAVANA)
These eight musicians from Bolivia, Colombia, Poland, London and Fife (Scotland), are the epitome of Pan-Global eclecticism.
The hot stuff of deep African influences, heavy pulsating beats, streams through their traditional Latin rhythm while British Jazz, including some excellent alto sax, adds another euphoric accent to the swirl.

Contrary to popular belief, the Ibata Brothers do not run a crime syndicate, in downtown La Paz, but front an exciting Latin dance band playing a combination
of Jazz/salsa, merengue and other Latin rhythms.
Bolivar UK, a 10 piece outfit and habitues of the London Latin Scene, have brought their distinctive an vibrant music to Edinburgh for the entire festival.
[Bolivar Band UK]. - "...Unique among Latino bands in this country, perhaps even in Europe." ["City Limits", 10/11/88] |

Band work, and sessions. Played with - Latin Machine. Have played and recorded with Inner Force, there's a New CD on sale (!) in St Lucia under the name of the singer, Delores Francis. Played up to about 2005 with Steve Benbow (died 2006) he was an excellent guitarist and singer who was at the start of the wave of folk/jazz/rock guitarists that hit the UK from the 50's on, from Davy Graham, thru Bert Jansch to John Martyn, etc. Vincent did a good Jump-Jive band called, The Bontempis from 2005 to this year when our vocalist Tony Cooper sadly died. Aside from that Vincent has played doing sessions in pubs, etc, sometimes with quite well-known people; Like Janusz Carmelo, the Polish trumpeter player.
Has been playing with "Bolivar Band UK" from 1985. Almost from day one. |

Trumpeter Stu Hamer is the
brother of trumpet player Ian Hamer. I can find no biographical
information of any significance. In his teens, like his brother he
played in the band run by their mother Mary Daly Hamer in the
Merseyside area. His only record available in the UK is a 1967
session with the Joe Harriott Quintet that proves him to be a superb
trumpeter in the classic bebop style.
In the late 1950s he was playing in Germany and appeared on a couple
of record dates:
June 23rd, 1958 An eleven piece band including Zoot Sims and Kenny
Clarke - recorded somewhere in Germany...
September 29th, 1959 This was a twelve piece band of mostly German
musicians and they recorded one title in Berlin...
Joe Harriott Quintet - June 20th, 1967 (Melodisc SLP12-150)
Joe Harriott (as), Stu Hamer (tp), Pat Smythe (p), Coleridge Goode
(b), Phil Seamen (d).
Tuesday Morning Swing*/A Time For Love*/The Rake*/Blues In
C*/Shepherd's Serenade*/Polka Dots And Moonbeams*/Strollin'
South*/Just Goofin'*/Count Twelve.
(*Cadillac CD - Joe Harriott Quintet Swings High)
On November 7th, 1968 the Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band played a
20th and 30th anniversary concert in Berlin. The five piece trumpet
section included Dizzy Gillespie, Dizzy Reece and Stu Hamer and the
record was issued on the German label MPS...
c1968 the Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra played a another concert
in Europe, probably Italy. The five piece trumpet section included
Gillespie, Reece and Hamer and the band recorded one title which was
issued on an Italian label...
Keith Greenhalf adds the following:
"He played with a latin group called 'Bolivar UK' around the 1984/87 period and appears on one
title with them from a cd recorded at the Bass Clef Studio over the
club in probably 1986. That title is 'Merengue' and the cd sleeve
says he appears as a special guest.
He seems to have played regularly with them in this period. The cd
is called 'Samba con Salsa' on Bassclef 31".

Introducing trombone poetry
This is a solo performance project that
interweaves music and poetry by Paul Taylor in a kind of poetry
slalom.
Music frames poems; poems shape music.
Much has been written about music and musicians.
Now a musician writes back, with new music improvised before your
very ears, and new poems about jazz, drink,
urban life and sopranophobia.
Trombone poetry grew out of performances at improvisation clubs in
London and jazz clubs worldwide, and draws on a lifetime of playing
music and reading
poetry.
For more information,
mail to:web@trombonepoetry.com please see the
faq or
themes.
The
events page also lists performances with various bands, ranging
from jazz to latin to pop and beyond.
Enjoy your visit.

Paz - Kandeen Love Song Spotlite SPJ-507 (1977)
In 1974 keyboard player Geoff Castle joined Latin fusion band PAZ
and started a Sunday night residency at the Kensington pub in
Holland Park, which ran for 8 years. The band, led by the late Dick
Crouch, who wrote most of the material, built a huge following and
in 1976 recorded the first of many BBC broadcasts. The band’s first
album “Kandeen Love Song”, issued on Spotlite Records in 1977,
quickly became popular on the club scene. |
Morrisey & Mullen (Chris Fletcher Percussion)Morrissey
Mullen, aka M&M is a British jazz-funk/fusion group of the seventies
and eighties. It was formed by Dick Morrissey, ex-IF, (tenor and
soprano saxes and flute) and Jim Mullen, ex-Brian Auger's Oblivion
Express, (guitar), who joined forces in 1975 and played together for
some 16 years, during which they came to be known as "Mr Sax and
Captain Axe" because of their hallmark based around "duels" or calls
and responses between guitar and sax.
Early members of the band had included two top session musicians
from New Zealand: Frank Gibson, Jr. on drums and Bruce Lynch on
bass. The band was also a springboard for a new generation of young
British musicians, including Chris Fletcher on percussion, Gary
Husband on drums, Claire Hamill and Carol Kenyon as vocalists (both
on whom appeared with Dick Morrissey on the 1981 Jon & Vangelis
album The Friends of Mr. Cairo), Tessa Niles, and Noel McCalla among
others, until Dick Morrissey’s ill health required too many visits
to hospital for the band to be viable.

Greetings Archangel Ibata...
That is the Title and will always be the title i bestow upon YOU
and all angels of music that i have met upon this world.
From my childhood in the hills of Jamaica dancing to Rural
folklore music played by elders on accordions and Banjo's while i
skipped and dance up to my arrival on the shores of this
extraordinary England I have been glad to share the essence and
spirit of Blessed ones like you who strive to bring spiritual
healing, upliftment, rest and happiness to humanity..
It is most definitely Lee... The same Natty headed lanky Lee from
two decades ago who love Latin Salsa, Soukous, Zouk, Samba, Rhumba,
Afro Beat, Mbira, Reggae, Dancehall.. You name it.
I am very impressed by the

LEE HUDSON's NEW
BOOK
Published: 20 July 2009

by Lee A. Hudson
In this collection of short stories the reader
is escorted through young Jamaican boy Mappy's eyes into a tropical
world where nature, play, folklore, and a sense of closeness prevail.
In this peaceful community everyone shares in the delights of harvest,
the spiritual upliftment of religion, the mysteries of old traditions,
the joy of celebrations and pain of bereavement.
The story takes a dramatic turn once Mappy is uprooted from his
tropical paradise and lands in Montego Bay, where a whole new harsh
reality puts an end to his childhood innocence.

The new songs and the direction we are taking on, are quite different to the Bolivar Band UK days.
Experimenting new parameters and ideas, absorbing on what we are going through, this past and difficult days, and years, but also being positive about it...
Rolando & Jose do not believe in music tags, but they kept that Latin feel to their new material.
Two of the songs were recorded in April 2005, for a demo Promo Area, with a young drummer, Ismael Ferreras Alvarez.
Hopefully, another great drummer will be involved with this project, no other than, "Brent Keefe" and "Bill Bland"(Congas & Percussion) |

LET' S LISTEN TO THE SONG
THAT WE HEAR WITHIN
THE LAND IN WHICH was BORN
THE QUALITIES OF THE FUTURE WE LIVE FOR
COLOURS OF INFINI'l'Y
RELISH AND HAPPINESS
LUXURIES BESTOWED
BY THE EXPANSE WHERE THEY WERE BORN
BY THE EXPANSE WHERE WE NOW LIVE
TODAY WE CANNOT OPEN
THE PADLOCK TO THE PA8T WHERE IS TO BE FOUND
THE INNOCENCE OF THEIR LIVES
WITH NO THOUGHT OR LOOK TO THE FUTURE
TO THE FUTURE
WE CHIP AWAY PIECE AFTER PIECE OF HER BODY
INFLICTING INJURIES WHICH UNHEALED
WILL STOP US FROM SEEING HER GREEN MANTLE
SHIELDING THEIR PAST AND OUR FUTURE
IT SEEMS WE WANT TO CUT AND BURN THE LAND & FORESTS.
(Chorus)
THE EARTH OF THE INCAS EMBRACES YOUR PAST
THIS EARTH SO FANCIFUL
FULL OF RADIATING ENERGY JUST AS TREIR LlVES
THE EARTH OF THE INCAS EMBRACES YOUR PAST
AS A LEGACY THEY LEFT THEIR SONGS
IMPREGNATED IN THE MOUNTAINSIDE.
